Sangiovese is the grape of Chianti in Italy. Australia has adopted this variety with some enthusiasm since Coriole pioneered it in Mc Laren Vale, S.A. with quite some success in the early 1990’s . It makes a lovely savoury wine that is suited to strong Italian flavours in food.
Don’t expect to jump up and down when you taste it in a line up of wines for the first time, because it can seem chewy and dry. But serve it up with a tomato based Italian style braised beef and see how it sings. It is medium bodied and shows lots of the classic bitter cocoa flavours that I think characterise this variety.
If you bought a $15 bottle of imported Chianti it would not taste this good.
