Meet the Makers

  • Robbie Ellis

    Location: Macedon Ranges, VIC

Varieties: Skinzy Triple Treat, Pinot Gris, Nebbiolo, Shiraz, Pinot Noir (previous vintage) and Gamay

The story: Robbie’s father, John Ellis, was the original wine maker for Pizzini, when Marshall and Freddie were building the Pizzini brand way back in 1993.

Rob is the wine maker at the family-owned winery called Hanging Rock Winery in the Macedon Ranges. The connection was made thanks to Mark Foletta, who gets most of his grapes made into wine at the Hanging Rock Winery.

Our search for a Pinot Noir in a 2021 Vintage lead us to Robbie, and it was the start of a long and happy relationship. Robbie is now making some fantastic natural wines for ReWine (an orange wine for the natural consumer). His flexibility as a wine maker has been incredibly helpful, with Robbie quickly being roped into making the 2021 Pinot Gris from Mark Foletta.

  • Mark Foletta

    Location: Benalla, VIC

Varieties: Pinot Gris, Gamay, Reserve Shiraz

The story: Mark has been working with ReWine for more than 10 years. It all started when Mark’s sister Sally, came into the market trying to find a distributor for his dad, Ian’s, Pinot Gris. It ended up being the first wine we sold from the Foletta’s, and we continued to buy it for several years. Then one day Mark called up, saying he had a bunch of Malbec that he didn’t know what to do with. After some discussion, together we decided to collaborate on making a Malbec especially for ReWine. Mark knew of an under-utilised winery down the road from him (Kooyonga), and after some sweet talking, he convinced them to make a Malbec out of his grapes. Marshall developed a vintage plan and the wheels were in motion. The wine straight off the ferment was so good that they didn’t bother putting it on oak or ageing it at all. It went on to wine best in show at the Melbourne Malbec Show.

Mark is now planting varieties exclusively for ReWine, those being Nebbiolo and Gamay.

  • Steve Yang

    Location: Trentham Cliffs, NSW

    Varieties: Prosecco, Rosé

The story: Trentham Estate are an established brand on the middle Murray, though Steve is new to Trentham. He used to work at Duxton Vineyards and played musical winemaker chairs with Tony Allen when the two of them swapped roles between Trentham Estate and Duxton Vineyards. Both bring their own experience and styles to the new regions and grapes grown in the vineyards, and both produce excellent wines that we are happy to put into the ReWine barrels. The Prosecco also won a trophy for best NSW Prosecco!

  • Bart van Olphen

    Location: Merbein, VIC

Varieties: Ansonica / Inzolia, Falanghina, Nero d’Avola

The story: Bart van Olphen’s wine journey has lead his around the world; from his native Holland, Germany, and the USA. He then worked alongside Steve Pannell for eight years in McLaren Vale before settling in Victoria.

Bart is married to Kim Chalmers, from the widely known Chalmers vineyards. This is how he sources and makes such wonderful wine.

ReWine’s relationship with Chalmers started when they had one of the first releases of Viognier in Australia in 2012. They had produced a high yield and we were looking for a new variety, we ended up buying a few thousand litres - which was a lot at the time. That first batch took us 3 years to sell. A testament to the ReWine wine handling process is that the Viognier was better at the end of the 3 years than when it was originally purchased.

Chalmers is an innovator in Italian varieties, essentially being a research and development facility for new varieties being grown in Australia. They specifically look to cultivate varieties that will be better suited to the ever-changing climate in Australia, especially the warmer summers in coming years. Since 2012, ReWine has purchased the first two vintages of Ansonica ever made in Australia, and one of the first Nero d’Avola.

  • Simon Robertson

    Location: Gundagai, NSW

    Varieties: Sangiovese , Chenin Blanc

The story: Simon and his father started in the wine industry producing consistently good Noble/Botrytis wine in Australia (out of the hilltop region, Canberra).

Simon has been dealing with the ReWine family since 1995, where Simon approached Marshall to do his distribution for a label called Bidgeebong.

Since then, they have become great mates and worked on many projects for ReWine, like the Gold Medal winning Nebbiolo (2014 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show). On one occasion, Simon asked us what to do with 5 tonnes of Nebbiolo grapes, which Marshall said to make Rosé out of (thanks to tasting Steve Pannell’s Neb-Rosé). The Neb- Rosé ended being one of the most popular wines ever sold at ReWine.

We continue to work with Simon as he has firm views on growing wine sustainably and managing the land to guarantee quality wine in a changing climate. Our 2021 Sang from his winery Tumblong Estate was such a good seller and it’s now all gone! The 2022 Chenin Blanc has won two major wine show trophies, and the 2022 Sangiovese is promised to be one of the best yet.

  • Tony Allen

Location: North of Mildura, Murrumbidgee, NSW

    Varieties: Fiano, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot

The story: Duxton Wines and ReWine are a new relationship, based on aligned values and wine-making principles. Duxton Vineyards is a firm advocate for sustainable wine production through a range of initiatives, their goal is reversing agriculture’s adverse contribution to Australia’s environment by applying regenerative farming practices to the land it operates. The techniques used improves soil health and increases biodiversity on farm, so they are a perfect partner for ReWine.

Whilst looking for Nero d’Avola, Kim Chalmers referred us to Tony at Duxton Estate at the start of 2020. Duxton are a supplier of warm climate varieties, highly suited to the area.

  • Merryn Roe

    Location: Melbourne, VIC

Varieties: Orange Blossom Honey Liqueur, Summer Tonic Syrup

The story: Merryn is a local wine maker brewing in Brunswick. Her label (@honing.wine) specialises in experimenting with old country style recipes. Merryn uses locally grown fruits, flowers and honeys to make 100% natural and additive free wines and spirits unlike anything you've ever tasted before.

  • Seppeltsfield

    Location: Barossa Valley, SA

    Varieties: Sherry, Topaque, Tawny, Muscat

The story: Seppeltsfield require no introduction as one of the oldest and most established brands in Australian wine, we have been buying fortified wines from the Seppelstfield estate since the beginning of ReWine in 2005. The relationship with the ReWine Crew goes back to the 90s when Marshall was doing wholesale to the Melbourne restaurant scene.

A little on the history of Seppeltsfield: In 1850, Joseph Seppelt, an emigrant of Silesia, purchased 158 acres of land in the Hundred of Nuriootpa from Hermann Kook, farmer of Tanunda, at £1 an acre. Designating it ‘Seppeltsfield’, Joseph’s original intention was to farm tobacco, with later Seppelt generations concentrating the estate’s efforts on grape growing and winemaking. The estate returned to private ownership in 2007, now under the custodianship of proprietor Warren Randall – a qualified viticulturist and winemaker who worked for the Seppelt family during the 1980s.

  • Robert Bruno

    Location: Riverina, NSW

    Varieties: Semilon Sauvignon Blanc

The story: Robert Bruno is a young dedicated winemaker from Toorak Winery who shows a passion for making quality wines. His ambition is to make an impression on the Australian wine industry by setting his own individual standards of style and quality.

Robert’s qualifications include a Wine Science Degree at Charles Sturt University and hands on experience in France and Australia's Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Central Victoria. Robert makes a range of varietal wines, each maintaining the individual characteristics of the grape variety.

Toorak Winery’s vision is to make affordable wine for all tastes. This philosophy also encompasses drawing from the grape berry the best possible characters from all they grow and harvest.

  • Joel and Freddie Pizzini

    Location: Whitfield, King Valley, VIC

    Varieties: Brachetto

The story: Our relationship with the Pizzini family goes back to 1993, when the wine maker at the time, Fred, approached Marshall to be his wholesale distributer when they first started the winery. Between Marshall and Freddie, they developed the Pizzini Brand over a year, laying the building blocks for what the Pizzini brand is today. Freddie and Marshall have continued to pontificate on the wine industry and football, but not politics.

Because of this longstanding relationship, many of the ReWine crew have been on educational trips through the King Valley with the Pizzini winery as a large feature. Pizzini have made several wines for ReWine over the years, including our incredibly popular previous Sangiovese. The style of Pizzini suits our tastes, as well as our customers.

  • Mark and Duncan Lloyd

    Location: Coriole, McLaren Vale, SA

    Varieties: Olives

The story: The Lloyd family and the ReWine family have been working together since the early 90s. Mark is the reason Marshall started in the wine business, way back in 1993. Since then, they have collaborated on wines for both Coriole and ReWine, innovating on new varieties and styles, and experimenting with new practices to keep ahead of the curve and continue to be industry leaders in their own right. Coriole innovate further by combining sustainability with their wine making, making them the perfect partner for ReWine.

In their own words: “Coriole has a commitment to sustainability on many levels. Our solar energy solution reduces our energy costs and contributes to a sustainable future for our business and our wines. For many years we have been working to regenerate native vegetation areas on the property. Water in the property is recycled, rain and bore. We are increasingly interested in bio-management of the soil producing our own compost and green manures. Our organic vegetable garden grows produce for Coriole Restaurant's seasonal menu.”

Chenin is one of our favourite varieties, and Marshall has been championing the variety since 1993. Mark and his son, Duncan, have been regular suppliers to ReWine since its inception. Because of this longstanding relationship, ReWine and the Lloyds have been in constant communication, so whenever there is a bit of excess wine available, ReWine gets a look in. They also produce the best olives!

  • Mark Walpole

    Location: Beechworth, VIC

    Varieties: Chardonnay (previous vintage)

The story: Mark is the leading viticulturist in Victoria’s Northeast, and the ReWine crew have been dealing with him since meeting at the Annual King Valley Winemakers & Growers Campfire Night circa 1998.

Mark worked for Brown Brothers for a long time, before being involved in a project in Heathcote called Greenstone. After leaving Greenstone, he went to Beechworth and started his current winery called Fighting Gully Road (named after one of his vineyard sights in Beechworth).

Because of the lengthy relationship ReWine has with Mark, we get the Beechworth Chardonnay- something hard to come by and exclusive at ReWine. The Tempranillo we received from Mark is from the oldest Tempranillo vineyards in Victoria (with Mark pioneering the variety), and he has also made the Pinot Noir for us previously. However, over the years the Beechworth Chardonnay has really developed a cult following across our stores.

  • Mark Matthews

    Location: Gippsland, VIC

    Varieties: Pinot Noir

The story: Mark Matthews began working with Caledonia Australis in 2008 after acquiring the major vineyards and assuming day to day responsibility for managing vineyards and winemaking. In late 2009 the Matthews family also acquired both brands and stock thus turning Caledonia Australis and Mount Macleod into a small family domain.

Mark and ReWine go way back to the days in the Preston market, where Marshall and Mark dealt with wine together often.

  • Local Brewing Co

    Location: Clifton Hill, VIC

Beers: Lager, Surplus Mango Sour, Sunset XPA, Victory Draught

The story: Local Brewing Co. are a Melbourne based brewery, driving real impact by using beer to provide food to families in need. They've teamed up with SecondBite, who work with Australian supermarkets to minimise waste and provide a positive community impact. For every pack or pint (or ReWine reusable bottle) purchased, a meal is provided to an Aussie family in need.

  • Mark and Jenny Morey and niece, Lisa

    Location: Bunbartha, VIC

    Varieties: Dry Apple Heritage Cider

The Story: Mark and Jenny Morey are third generation fruitgrowers. On one of their trips to the UK to check on their Pink Lady apple exports, they discovered cider and the diverse ranges made. Thus Cheeky Grog Co was established in 2004, as a means of making cider to utilise 100% of the fruit grown on their own farms for a commercial return. After many years of trials and equipment purchases, they began bottling their cider in 2014. Maintaining it as a family run business, Mark and Jenny’s niece Lisa was hired to be the cider maker. As Lisa comes from a wine-making family (Her parents being the owners and brains behind Beechworth’s Sorrenberg winery), it was a natural progression for her to be able to highlight the tannins and flavour complexity in cider. Yet another reason why ReWine and Cheeky Grog Co. make such good friends! They have since perfected the art of cider making using a unique blend of Pink Lady, Granny Smith and Heritage Apples. Their ciders consist of 100% home grown fruit with no added sugars.
